Churchill Nature and Legacy

Day 1: Arrive in Winnipeg and transfer to your downtown hotel. Explore the vibrant Exchange District and the historic Forks area, featuring a river promenade and the scenic Esplanade Riel Bridge. Visit the Legislative Building and the renowned Manitoba Museum

Day 2: Board Calm Air for your northbound flight to Churchill (morning or afternoon flights are available). Upon arrival, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your accommodation.  Visit the Parks Canada Heritage Centre at the VIA Rail station for a listing of slide shows available, and sample regional cuisine this evening at one of the many local restaurants. (B)

Day 3: Discover Churchill's legacy on a Cultural and Historical Town Tour. Explore this northern community and visit local attractions such as Cape Merry, the Port of Churchill and the Polar Bear Compound. Learn the rich history of Churchill including the early explorers who founded the Hudson Bay Company, through the military presence to present day. Stop at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre for a quick visit.  Situated along the Hudson Bay seacoast at the meeting of three major biomes - marine, northern boreal forest, and tundra - the CNSC facilitates arctic research and education such as the Canadian Wildlife Service polar bear project and climate change studies.

A Tundra Buggy® tour has been arranged this afternoon, allowing a rare opportunity to travel across the Wildlife Management Area in search of Ptarmigan, Arctic fox, Snowy Owl, and Arctic hare.

Day 4: Embark on a day excursion to Cross River. This tour combines the beautiful, vocal Beluga Whales with the rugged scenery of the West Peninsula. Visit archaeological sites, historically significant Sloop Cove, the Prince of Wales Fort. Following your tour you will be dropped off at the Eskimo Museum. This excellent museum houses one of the world's largest and most comprehensive collections of Inuit artefacts and sculpture. (L)

This excursion is governed by tide schedule and departure time will be determined upon confirmation of travel dates.

Day 5: Join a guided nature hike to explore the boreal forest, taiga and tundra, and the Hudson Bay Coast. Visit fox denning areas and unique rock formations and fossils. This afternoon provides time to shop or take last minute photos before transferring to the airport for your return flight. An overnight stay in Winnipeg has been arranged.

Day 6: Your tour concludes upon check out this morning.
