| This summer tour to the
north will introduce you to some of the
flora, fauna and history of one of the most
interesting towns in our province.
Highlights will include viewing the Beluga
Whales at the mouth of the Churchill River,
as well as an interpretation of the history
of the Hudson’s Bay Company and its role
in the development of Canada's fur trade.
This tour is locally guided.
Day 1: The tour begins with an evening departure from Winnipeg on VIA Rail. The train winds its way northwest and even ventures into Saskatchewan before returning to Manitoba and northward on to Churchill. Private sleeping accommodation has been reserved for you. Day 2: As the train rolls slowly along you have an opportunity to view the changing landscape, from the rolling wheat fields of the Manitoba prairie, to the undulating hills of Porcupine and Duck Mountains, to the muskeg of the sub-arctic. Day 3: After an early morning arrival in Churchill, you will be met at the train station and transferred to your accommodation. Discover Churchill’s colourful history on this afternoon’s Town and Area Tour. Explore the town and visit places of interest such as Cape Merry and the Polar Bear Compound. Learn about the culture and history of a town built by true explorers. Day 4: Today you will enjoy a three-hour boat tour to view the pods of Beluga Whales. These magnificent, playful creatures migrate along the coast of the Hudson Bay, and thousands may be in the mouth of the Churchill River at any one time. The boats are equipped with onboard hydrophones that magnify the vocalizations of these whales. This boat tour makes a stop for an interpretive tour at the historic Fort Prince of Wales. The afternoon offers free time to visit with the locals and the famous Gypsy Bakery, explore Churchill on your own or visit the Eskimo Museum. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Inuit artifacts dating from pre-Dorset, Dorset, Thule and modern Inuit times. Day 5: This afternoon we have arranged a Tundra Buggy tour, allowing you a rare opportunity to travel across the tundra in this giant vehicle and perhaps catch a glimpse of Ptarmigan, Arctic Fox, Snowy Owl, and possibly even Caribou. Day 6: This morning will be your second opportunity to spend time with the “Sea Canaries of the North” on a one-hour zodiac tour. This puts you almost eye to eye with the lovable creatures. You will have some free time to shop for souvenirs before your transfer back to the airport for the Calm Air flight to Winnipeg. |
