Grand Countryside
(008201C-20)

We visit 4 National Parks: Snaefellsnes peninsula, Skaftafell, Thingvellir and Jokulsargljufur. We will have the possibility to do some walking in the beautiful countryside during the tour. Accommodation is provided in hotels with private facilities. The hotels used on tours are often "summer hotels," used most of the year as boarding schools or country hotels which are simple and clean. On some departures this tour may be operated in reverse.  There is an average of 1 to 2 hours of walking per day - good walking shoes and waterproof clothing are required.

Day 1: Arrival

Early morning at Keflavik Airport, transfer to Reykjavik for one night. A variety of accommodation choices are available from cosy guesthouses, comfortable moderate hotels to superior and deluxe properties. Please ask for pricing details for your transfer and hotel at the time of booking your tour.

Day 2: Snaefellsnes
We drive to the town of Borgarnes and on to the Snaefellsnes peninsula with its national park and the dominating glacier. We visit small fishing towns, drive through lava fields and enjoy the coastal  scenery on our way to the town of Stykkisholmur. Our first overnight is in the Borgarfjordur area.

Day 3: Borgarfjordur-Thingeyjarsysla
We visit the beautiful waterfalls of Hraunfossar, where water comes running from under the lava and into the river Hvíta, and Deildartunguhver, one of the most voluminous hot springs in Europe and through the fertile farmlands of Skagafjordur and Eyjafjordur with it´s beautiful town of  Akureyri, the capital of the north. We also visit Godafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, before reaching our accommodation,Thingeyjarsysla, where we stay for the next two nights.

Day 4: Husavik Whale Watching
We start the day with a 3 hour whale watching tour from Husavík, weather permitted. Afternoon is at leisure to ponder around the town with the possibility to visit museums and the church.

Day 5: Godafoss-Myvatn
We visit the waterfall Godafoss, en-route to Lake Myvatn. There is lush vegetation here and many different species of birds, some of which are not found anywhere else in Europe. We visit the lava field Dimmuborgir and climb up to the rim of the ash crater Hverfjall. Before heading back to our accommodation we relax in Myvatn Nature Bath.

Day 6: Dettifoss-Fljotsdalsherad
We travel around Tjornes Peninsula and visit the magnificent waterfall Dettifoss, the most powerful in Europe. For the next three nights we will stay in the neighbourhood of Egilsstadir.

Day 7: Fljotsdalur-Seydisfjordur
We tour around the Lake Logurinn, passing the farm mansion at Skriduklaustur with its large unusual type of house. When conditions are suitable we walk up to Hengifoss, one of the highest waterfalls in Iceland. We also visit the fishing town of Seydisfjordur.

Day 8: Borgarfjordur-Eystri
This short wide fjord and grassy fertile valley with a charming fishing village of the same name is situated north-east of Egilsstadir. Magnificent colourful mountains and numerous beautiful rocks and rare stones are to be found here.

Day 9: Fljotsdalsherad-Skaftafell
Vatnajokull, Europe’s biggest glacier, dominates the landscape with its glacial tongues calving into a glacial lagoon. We take a boat trip on the lagoon among the icebergs. For the next two nights, we will stay in the neighbourhood of Skaftafell National Park.
