Bakers Narrows Lodge located in Northern Manitoba offers a wealth of interesting things to do. We have put together a three-day package to accommodate those wanting to see of the Aurora Borealis and to learn about some of the history and traditions of Canada’s North. Our area typically sees the Aurora Borealis 185 out of 365 days. They are particularly spectacular in fall and winter. To make a bus tour interesting to a group with various interests, we have partnered with other local people to put together an interesting package.

Day 1: Arrive from Winnipeg late in afternoon. Check in to Bakers Narrows Lodge’s deluxe log cabins. Enjoy a sumptuous dinner after which a local historian gives a slide presentation on the history of Flin Flon. Watch for the Aurora from the spacious deck just off the dining room, or from the large hot tub. Look for constellations using the telescope on the deck.

Day 2: After a hearty breakfast we travel to Flin Flon to view the Museum. It is housed in a former Canadian National Railway building. The Museum contains artifacts collected from mining, transportation and cultural sources, including a diving suit and helmet, a Linn tractor used in early freight hauls and a train sweeper and ore car. Also on display is a 63lb trout caught on Lake Athapapuskow. We return to the lodge for lunch, after which you may take a boat tour of the area or an optional aerial tour on one of Bakers Narrows Lodge’s float planes. You may want to go for a walk up the stairs at Bakers Narrows Provincial Park for a panoramic view of the area. We’ll enjoy dinner at the Lodge, after which we will be treated to a Cultural Arts Demonstration – Caribou Hair Tufting. You will be given the opportunity to try your hand at Caribou Hair Tufting, guided patiently by Theresa Wride, a local lady who does some beautiful work. While we work on our projects, we’ll keep our eyes open to make sure we see the Aurora when they occur.

Day 3: After breakfast you’ll have the opportunity to try your hand at fishing. Depending upon the time of year that you come, Lake Athapapuskow with provide you with the excitement of catching a Lake Trout, a Northern Pike or Walleye. You might even be able to boast of achieving Master Angler status. Our guides cook you a tasty lunch in the wilderness. Later we’ll travel to Northern Buffalo Sculptures where we’ll meet internationally known sculptor, Irvin Head. Irvin’s work won accolades as the people’s choice, when on display at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and has taken him to Japan and Switzerland where his work was greatly admired. He works with stone, bone, and wood to make outstanding carvings, one of which you just may have to take home.

We’ll travel back to the lodge for dinner where we’ll later have the opportunity again to view the Aurora Borealis and enjoy a reading by a local author about his adventures on his trap line.

Day 4: Those who opt for the 4-Day tour will enjoy a trip to visit a local dog sled enthusiast who will take individuals for a ride behind his team (during the winter). These dogs love to run and will take you on the ride of your life!
