Here are three opportunities to really
appreciate our island heritage as Marco Polo
visits some of the most interesting, but
remoter, parts of the British Isles. Our
offshore islands are so full of appeal and
allow you to sample prehistoric sites, ancient
cultures, beautiful gardens, wonderful beaches
and even tax-free shopping. With bustling
Dublin providing a direct contrast, the sights
and memories from this cruise will be so
varied that you may wonder why you have not
done it before!
A relaxing day at sea as you head to the
Cromarty Firth and Invergordon, gateway to the
Scottish Highlands, historic castles, Culloden
battlefield and Loch Ness. Further north, a
day is spent in Kirkwall exploring the Orkney
Islands which offer a fascinating mix of small
settlements and Stone Age sites. Passing Cape
Wrath, you reach Stornoway on Lewis in the
Outer Hebrides, home to pre-historic standing
stones, bountiful wildlife and a proud Gaelic
culture. The rugged Isle of Mull is next but
'genteel' is a more apt description for the
Georgian ambience of picturesque Tobermory,
the main town. Perhaps, visit tiny Iona or
take a trip on the Mull Railway. Dublin is as
busy and entertaining a city as you could wish
for, full of genuine charm, hospitality and
great sightseeing. Then back to Britain's
islands: dropping anchor off St Mary's in the
Isles of Scilly, with a tour option to
Tresco's Abbey Gardens. Your final call is at
St Peter Port, Guernsey's picturesque main
town in our beloved Channel Islands. Wonderful
beaches, beautiful scenery and tax-free
shopping are a heady combination before Marco
Polo sets a course for the last leg of her
voyage back to Tilbury.
Day 1:
London Tilbury
The Marco Polo sails at 1800hrs.
Day 2: At Sea
Cruising the North Sea en route to Scotland.
Day 3: Invergordon
(Scotland)
On the beautiful Cromarty Firth, here is your
gateway to the Scottish Highlands with its
dramatic history and spectacular scenery.
Haunting lochs and romantic castles enchant
the visitor whilst the eerie, windswept
Culloden Battlefield and some distinguished
distilleries, most notably Glenmorangie, all
vie for your attention.
Day 4:
Kirkwall
The capital and administrative centre of the
Orkney Islands, set on the principal island
known as Mainland. The Orkneys comprise 70 or
so islands, rocks and skerries that cover an
area of 376 square miles. You can still detect
the Norse influence and the Stone Age
settlement at Skara Brae, older than either
the Pyramids or Stonehenge, is fascinating.
Day 5:
Stornoway & Portree
Having cruised around the northern tip of the
British Isles, you reach Stornoway, the only
town on Lewis, the most northerly of the Outer
Hebrides. This history-rich outpost offers a
tremendous diversity of interests including
the pre-historic Callanish Standing Stones,
fabulous coastlines, beaches and wildlife.
Day 6:
Tobermory
Genteel describes the lovely Georgian
harbourfront architecture of the little town
of Tobermory, whilst rugged is a more apt
description for the wild moorland and
mountainous interior of the Isle of Mull. Take
a trip on the Mull Railway or visit tiny
traffic-free Iona, where St Columba first
brought Christianity in 563 AD.
Day 7: Dublin
The capital of the Emerald Isle, with its
images of ancient Kings, magical folklore and
that essential Irish hospitality. From Trinity
College to stylish O'Connell Street, Dublin
offers a real sense of history, wonderful
restaurants, cafés and of course, bars. Enjoy
the craic and perhaps an expertly served pint
of Guinness.
Day 8: St Mary's &
Tresco
Dropping anchor off Hugh Town, the main town
of the Isles of Scilly, affords the chance to
visit two of this unique cluster of islands,
lying 28 miles south west of Land's End. St.
Mary's is the largest at just six square
miles, while the effects of the sub-tropical
climate are spectacularly evident in the blaze
of colour at Tresco's renowned Abbey Gardens.
Day 9: St
Peter Port
The cobbled streets and relaxed style of
Guernsey's picturesque main town introduce you
to the unique Channel Islands. Certainly more
Anglo than French, but with enough 'je ne sais
quoi' to make you think otherwise. Guernsey
has a captivating island history, wonderful
beaches, miles of coastal walks and tax-free
shopping for the less energetic!
Day 10: London
Tilbury
Marco Polo arrives at 0900hrs.
