is a four-day excursion in the Nature
Reserve of Breidafjordur Bay in Iceland.
Your home for three nights is the charming
Hotel Flatey on the Island of Flatey.
Large parts of the area are undiscovered by
travellers and this is a unique opportunity
to enjoy the dramatic views from sea and
explore the area on land.Breidafjordur
Bay is known for its uncountable islands,
deserted fjords and inlets, incredible
birdlife, historic places, untouched nature,
millions of puffins, towering bird cliffs
and volcanic craters.
This tour is ideal for travellers that
want to experience a true adventure, explore
lesser known areas and still have the
comfort of a good hotel and gourmet cuisine
in the evenings.
The Island of Flatey is an unforgettable
place of peace and serenity (population 5,
number of cars 2). Houses are from the 19th
century, walking around the old village will
take you back in time.
During your stay, you can watch numerous
species of birds, explore old times,
rejuvenate, wake up to the birds singing,
learn about the islands unique history and
visit the church with its striking artwork.
Hotel Flatey is a small charming boutique
hotel located at the heart of the old
village. The hotel is recently renovated in
converted houses overlooking the old market
square and the sea front. The hotels
restaurant serves gourmet cuisine made from
the freshest available Icelandic products.

Day 1: Birds,
Fresh Sushi, and the Tranquil Island of
Flatey
12:00 Pick-up from hotels in Reykjavik.
Enjoy a guided sightseeing tour of west
Iceland on the way to Stykkisholmur.
14:30 Arrival at Stykkisholmur harbour.
Passengers go aboard Brimrun, our
exploration vessel for the next 4 days. The
Nature Cruise starts by exploring the
archipelago area of the Breidafjordur Bay.
We sail around uncountable islands, explore
strangely shaped cliffs and navigate
powerful tidal currents. You will also see
countless birds; puffins, arctic turns,
eider ducks, shags, and the majestic
white-tailed eagle!
At Dimonaklakkar, the highest island on the
bay, we go ashore and admire the stunning
view from the top. The island offers an
excellent opportunity for bird watching.
When back on board a small net-plough is
cast overboard and shellfish delicacies are
brought on board. Everyone gets the chance
to taste the delicious shellfish straight
from the sea. This is the freshest sushi you
will ever try!
18:30 Arrival at Flatey Island. Hotel
Flatey is located a short walk from the
harbour (luggage will be transported in one
of the Islands two cars!). Guided walk
around the old village, church, bird cliffs
& historic sites.
20:00 Dinner and at the hotel.
Day 2: Deserted
Fjords, Unspoiled Nature, Natural Hot Tubs
and Sea Angling!
08:00 Breakfast and briefing of today’s
itinerary.
09:30 Departure from Flatey. The day starts
by explore the surrounding islands. Then we
head towards a deserted inlet ‘Skálmafjörður’.
There the group is taken ashore on zodiacs.
Fee time to explore the area that is known
for old ruins, unspoiled nature, towering
mountains, wild foxes and a amazing
quietness.
12:30 Lunch is served at the seashore.
Today’s treat is a beach barbeque!
14:00 Back on board Brimrun. Now we head
along the coast and into Vatnsfjordur Fjord.
Here the boat is anchored and passengers
transferred ashore by zodiacs. Enjoy a soak
in a natural geothermal hot tub, located by
the seashore.
16:30 Departure from Vatnsfjordur. Now it’s
time for some fishing! Everyone that wants
gets to try sea angling! Back to Flatey –
time to relax before dinner.
20:00 Dinner at the hotel. Tonight treat is
the freshly caught fish!
Day 3: Towering
Bird Cliffs, Thousands of Birds, Whales &
Dolphins
08:00 Breakfast and briefing of today’s
itinerary.
09:30 Sail from Flatey towards Látrabjarg
Cliff – along the way is a stunning view of
the coastline.
11:00 Látrabjarg Cliff is a 14 km long,
sheer cliff, almost half a kilometre high,
and the tip is the westernmost point of
Europe. It is incredible to sail under the
cliffs and look up at the countless birds.
For centuries, brave men were roped down the
cliffs during the breeding season to collect
eggs. Sometimes as much as 40.000 eggs and
36.000 birds were taken in this area alone.
The cliffs were therefore a vital part of
the areas food supply.
12:30 Lunch is served onboard. Afterwards
we continue to explore the amazing area.
15:00 On the way back to Flatey we look out
for whales, dolphins and seals.
17:00 Arrival at Flatey. Free time to relax
and enjoy this timeless island.
20:00 Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Shags,
Puffins & Shark
08:00 Breakfast and briefing of today’s
itinerary.
09:00 Sightseeing tour on zodiacs to the
island of Klofningur; home to thousands of
shags, puffins and other seabirds. Fantastic
opportunity to photograph the birds close
up.
11:30 Lunch in Flatey Island
13:00 Departure from Flatey
14:00 Arrival in Stykkisholmur. Enjoy a walk
around the old town. Visit the new ‘Library
of Water’ located on a hill with a striking
view of the town and the archipelago.
15:00 Departure from Stykkisholmur. A short
drive to Bjarnarhofn Shark Museum. Look
around the museum and visit the ancient
church. You also get to taste traditional
Icelandic specialities; dried fish,
traditional shark and “Brennivin”, Icelandic
snaps known as Black Death!).
19:00 Arrival at a hotel in Reykjavik.
