Local Adventures in a Year of Staying Close to Home
With 2020 limiting travel options, we turned to places closer to home — and found something truly special. Last weekend, Chris and I took advantage of the beautiful summer weather and went canoeing on White Lake in Manitoba’s Whiteshell Provincial Park.
Expect the Unexpected on the Portage
We originally planned to portage to Cabin Lake for a longer trip, but outdated info led us to a dried-up pond instead. We skipped the full kilometre trek, enjoyed the blueberries and saskatoons, and turned the portage site into a spontaneous picnic spot. Sometimes the detour becomes the destination.
Wildlife, Stillness, and Moments You Can’t Capture
On the water, we spotted:
- Falcons and birds
- Countless insects
- A turtle sunning itself on a rock
I couldn't take many photos because the current kept pushing us toward shore. So instead, I focused on experiencing the moment — and it felt good to just be there without the pressure to document it all.
Paddle, Listen, Breathe
The sound of birdsong, water against the canoe, and wind in our ears made it easy to relax and let go of stress. The act of paddling — and nothing else — was enough. For a little while, it felt like Covid-19 didn’t exist at all.
We paddled far enough to leave behind buildings and campgrounds, until all we could see was wilderness.
Nature’s Perspective
It was easy to imagine how this land looked to Indigenous Peoples long before settlers arrived. Quiet, untouched, peaceful.
This experience reminded me how sacred Mother Earth truly is.
