Travel Agent FAM Trip Experience
First Time in Europe — and Why I Chose Greece
In September 2010, I took my very first trip to Europe — and I couldn’t have picked a better destination than Greece! As a travel agent, I was invited on a FAM (familiarization) trip with Transat Holidays. I was thrilled (and slightly nervous) to be flying solo from Toronto on a 10-hour flight.
Would I sleep? Would I survive the jet lag? Spoiler: I did — and I loved every second of it.
Discovering Athens: Ancient Wonders & Bustling Streets
Our itinerary began in Athens, Greece’s vibrant capital city. When we landed, we were encouraged not to nap — the best way to adjust to the time zone is to power through. After a full day of hotel inspections and an amazing dinner, we finally got some well-earned rest.
Over the next few days, we explored the incredible historical sites of Athens:
- The Acropolis and Parthenon
- The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Syntagma Square
- The Plaka district, full of shops, cafes, and cobblestone streets
Athens had a perfect blend of ancient history and modern Greek culture.
Island Hopping Begins: Mykonos
Next up, a ferry ride from the port of Piraeus brought us to Mykonos, a postcard-perfect island known for:
- Rocky hills and narrow winding streets
- Iconic white-washed buildings with bright blue shutters
- Windmills and blooming flower-filled balconies
Mykonos had a lively vibe, with small churches, charming shops, and a gorgeous harbour. It’s a great choice for travelers seeking beaches, nightlife, and a vibrant atmosphere.
Falling in Love with Santorini
Another ferry brought us to Santorini — and if you’ve ever seen a photo of blue-domed churches against a backdrop of deep blue sea, chances are it was taken here.
Santorini was breathtaking. We explored:
- The villages of Fira and Oia
- Spectacular sunset viewpoints
- Romantic cliffside streets and whitewashed architecture
If you’re looking for the perfect romantic Greek island, this is it. I fell in love with every inch of it.
A Quick Visit to Crete
Our final island stop was Crete, the largest and southernmost Greek island. We arrived in the evening, so our time was short — just one night — but I still got a sense of its charm.
Crete is known for:
- Resort areas on the northern coast
- Long golden beaches and warm seas
- Tavernas, shops, and a rich cultural heritage
Though we didn’t have much time there, I’d absolutely go back to explore Crete more fully.
Final Nights in Athens
We returned to Athens to wrap up the trip with a few more nights in the city. Reflecting on the journey, I felt deeply grateful to have experienced so many sides of Greece — history, nightlife, island life, and incredible food.
My Favourite Part?
That’s a tough question — but if I had to choose, I’d say Santorini. Seeing those famous blue-domed churches in person, with the Aegean Sea glistening below, was like stepping into a dream. I understand now why so many people fall head over heels for Greece.
Planning Your Greece Adventure?
Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a returning traveler, Greece offers something for everyone. From ancient ruins and cliffside sunsets to island hopping and seaside tavernas — it’s a destination that stays with you.
I would go back in a heartbeat.
